THE COLLECTION
This deeply resonant collection explores American identity through intimate
Indigenous portraits and sweeping Southwestern landscapes—honoring the dignity, resilience and quiet strength of the Navajo and Hopi nations. Featuring more than 100 photographs, True Americans includes Weiser’s celebrated environmental portraits of WWII Navajo Code Talkers Peter MacDonald (4 time Chairman Navajo Nation) and John Kinsel (battles of Guam,Bougainville, Iwo Jima) photographed at age 107 shortly before Kinsel’s passing in 2024. The exhibition also debuts never-before-seen works, including The Gray Family at El Capitan, Father/Son leather crafters and silversmiths Leroy and Royden Teesasyatoh at Cow Springs, and portraits of extended families in Monument Valley and Canyon de Chelly.
Weiser’s cinematic eye and emotional storytelling create a timeless vision of the AmericanWest —one rarely depicted in mainstream narratives. “These are portraits of the only True Americans,” says Weiser. “They honor the quiet truths that live in the faces of these reservations—the dignity and integrity of people who don’t usually ask to be seen, but absolutely deserve to be. I am deeply grateful to know and photograph Navajo and Hopi families in their homes and across the Navajo and the Hopi Reservations.
