Dean shaffer

how I approach my work……..

I am guided only by an active attempt to see the visual situation in front of me— without preconceived thoughts about what should be.  When I paint, any thoughts about technique, personal expression, originality, subject matter, or Art disappear. What remains is simply a search for order and a need for clarity. How do I be true to my experience?

In order to “see”, what becomes necessary is to remove memories and/or previously learned notions about the subject so that, once filters are removed, a purer vision of “what is” appears and the extraordinary order found in nature can be experienced. This guides my process, ultimately leading to the discovery of the mystery of the visible world, a world that is seen as relationships of color and abstraction.
